Sometimes you just want a GIF or a still frame from a video — without three steps

Someone says something legendary on a call you recorded, and you want three seconds of it as a GIF for the group chat. Or a client asks for "a still from around the two-minute mark" to use as a thumbnail. Tiny ask. Should take ten seconds. Instead you open DaVinci or Premiere, wait for it to load the project, set an in and out point, dig through export settings... to make a GIF. For Slack.
The dumb tax on small tasks
The tools we reach for scale completely wrong for this. A full NLE is built to finish a film, not to grab a single frame — it's a cathedral when you need a Post-it. Online GIF makers cap the length, slap a watermark on the output, and (again) want your video uploaded first. QuickTime will happily trim a clip but won't export a GIF. So a ten-second job turns into a five-minute detour, and you pay that tax every single time.
None of these are hard problems. They just don't have a home. The little jobs that should be instant:
- Grab one frame as a PNG or JPG for a thumbnail
- Cut a short loop into a GIF for Slack or Discord
- Pull just the audio out as an MP3
- Trim eight seconds off the front without re-rendering the whole thing
Make the small thing small again
The fix isn't clever, it's just having one fast, local tool that opens in a second and does the micro-jobs: scrub, mark, export a frame or a GIF or an MP3, close it, move on. No new project, no upload, no subscription, no watermark.
That's the lane DISKO Remix sits in — grab a still, cut a quick GIF, rip the audio, in about the time a big app would take to show its splash screen. Keep the NLE for editing. Use this for "I just need this one little thing."
Not every job needs a timeline. Some just need one frame.
