Brushwork is an oil painting and pencil sketch effect for After Effects and Premiere Pro, $7.99. It paints and draws footage with real strokes instead of filtering its pixels. In oil, big shapes go on first, then smaller and smaller strokes where the picture needs them, and the paint piles up and catches a light you can move. In pencil and pen, the drawing starts from its edges: dark, restated outlines first, then rough patches of straight hatching, with the paper left bare. Keyframe Paint On and the shot paints itself.

  1. Real strokes, planned from big shapes to small, not a filter over the pixels
  2. Oil, in three looks: Old Master, Dark Glaze and Bold, with paint that piles up on canvas and catches a light you can move
  3. Pencil and pen, in four looks: Graphite, Pen and Ink, Colored Pencil and Pale on Dark
  4. A sketch starts from its edges: dark, restated outlines, then rough straight hatching, with the paper left bare
  5. Paint On: keyframe it and the shot paints itself; a sketch draws its outlines, then its shading
  6. Repaint Every: a new painting every frame, or held for up to 24, like hand-painted animation
  7. On macOS, finds faces so eyes and mouths get the careful strokes, and finds the subject so a sketch can leave the background bare
  8. Focus Point: put the attention where you want it by hand
